Star Wars Horror Project is currently being developed at Disney
Disney is reportedly working on a secret Star Wars horror project, as revealed by Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy.
In a recent interview with Business Insider, and in information initially reported over at IGN. Gilroy shared insights into Lucasfilm’s ongoing projects, hinting at a more sinister take on the Star Wars universe. When asked about the possibility of a horror-themed Star Wars venture, he teased that the idea is already in development.
“They’re doing that. I think they’re doing that,” Gilroy said when discussing the horror project. “I think that’s in the works, yeah.”
If this is true, it could mark the first time Star Wars ventures into darker, more chilling territory on screen. Details about the project remain scarce—it’s unclear whether it will take the form of a TV series, a movie, or something entirely different. Furthermore, it’s unknown who is leading the creative efforts, and it could be a while before we get more details. Nonetheless, Gilroy’s comments indicate that Disney is actively considering exploring new, darker facets of the Star Wars universe.
Gilroy further elaborated on his creative process, reflecting on his work with Andor: “The right creator, and the right moment, and the right vibe … you can do anything,” he said. “So, my hope is that the show connects, and then we can pass along the favor that we were given from The Mandalorian, and we can pass along a good healthy backwind to someone else who wants to do something else cool.”
For years, Star Wars fans have dreamed of a more mature, no-holds-barred horror story set in the galaxy far, far away. While the franchise has primarily focused on the Skywalkers and their wide circle of characters, including Rey from the sequel trilogy, the darker corners of the universe remain largely unexplored. While a few spinoffs have ventured into scarier territory previously, like the famous Darth Vader scene at the end of Rogue One, the major productions still tend to cater to a broad audience, keeping the content somewhat more family-friendly.
Andor stands out as one of the more mature entries in the Star Wars universe, praised for its depth and complexity. And fans of the show won’t have to wait much longer, as Andor Season 2 premieres on April 22, with its first three episodes.
