Kingdom Hearts 4 Trailer Breakdown

The brand new Kingdom Hearts 4 Teaser Trailer provided us with a few more breadcrumbs.

Story reveals

While the trailer is relatively sparse, there are several things that can be gleaned from it story wise. The first is that Quadratum originally didn’t have Heartless, or other obvious manifestations of Light or Darkness before people from the main universe of Kingdom Hearts came there. The female speaker, clad in a black coat, states as much. This would suggest that the story will be in the midst of a bit of a crisis for the people there…

There were also a few characters shown off, including a couple we’d already seen before such as Strelitzia and Luxord (more likely his original person rather than the Nobody). As well as the surprise addition of Young Xehanort …. Again. (will Sora ever be free of him?)

Young Xehanort again

Another couple of characters include Vali, from Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road, and a character who looks strikingly similar to Brain, although it is difficult to be entirely certain due to missing his usual hat. Additionally, the angle of the shot makes it impossible to see if he has his earring or not. But the hair and eye colors are correct.

Brain probably

Although no new world was shown, and the entire thing is solely cutscene and action shots of the city in Quadratum… A new Keyblade in the action scenes looks like it fuses water and lava, possibly hinting at a Moana disney world, or Pixar’s Elemental, if one wished to speculate.

Gameplay

Gameplay has a few new things shown off. Sora is shown using magic that creates golden chains which hover in midair, allowing him to immediately follow up with a transition into flowmotion and slide along them at will, kind of similar to how ice in Kingdom Hearts 3 works, except with midair accessibility. An interesting twist to it is that the chains break apart behind him and turn into homing projectiles, attacking enemies for free in addition to the provided mobility.

Sora Riding Chains

He’s also shown using these chains in several other flashy attacks. And a similarly golden themed storm of blades reminiscent of the attraction attacks from 3, but lacking the disney ride aesthetic as he rides on it in a way similar to how Xehanort and Vanitas have used blade storms in the past…

Sora Bladestorm Attack

Easy to miss, Sora also uses a Barrier block when fighting a darkside, similar to Aqua or Riku in past games.

Sora Barrier

Overall, not a huge amount to go on, just a taste of the series usual action gameplay with a few additions that haven’t been shown off before.
