A Minecraft Movie Reaches $700 Million At the Box Office
A Minecraft Movie has officially surpassed $700 worldwide.
The movie based on the popular video game Minecraft is on a quest to become the highest-grossing video game movie of all time and beat The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned a whopping $1 billion at the Box Office in 2023. And at the current rate, it might just make it before it leaves theatres.
The film is currently at just under $718 million globally according to Box Office Mojo, while its competitor The Super Mario Bros. Movie topped out at $1,36 billion globally. Meaning A Minecraft Movie still needs to sell about $640 million worth of tickets before it can claim the throne from the Italian plumber.
It’s worth noting that both movies stars Jack Black in a key role. With the actor playing Steve and Bowser in both their respective movies. It looks like he’s found his new type cast, and I’m all here for it.
It seems unlikely that A Minecraft Movie will reach 1$ billion as fast as The Mario movie however, with the latter reaching that goal after just 26 days. And the former already being 18 days into its run. That only remains to be seen.
If the hype for the movie continues, we may see a close competition the likes of which we saw with Avengers: Endgame and Avatar back in 2019. At least this time, it’s between two competing companies, and neither of them are Disney.
